My boyfriend and I just went to Napa and Sonoma!.!.!.!.!.hands down THE best merlot I have ever had in my life is Chateau Ste!. Jean 2004!. They called it "liquid velvet" on the tasting menu and they weren't kidding!. Smooth and wonderful!. Since I am not a chardonnay fan by any measure, I stay away from those!. Merlots and cabs top my list!. Others to try are Rutherford Ranch merlot, Wente merlot (sort of has a blueberry taste), yummy Benzinger!. All these range anywhere in price from $15- $25 a bottle, with the exception of the Chateau Ste!. Jean!. That's like $90 a bottle and only available at the winery!. Unless you're near northern California, save that one for me, lol!. I have been surprised by a few cheap merlots that were tasty!. But if you want to cut your teeth on merlot, try the Rutherford!. You won't be disappointed!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
It's such an individual thing!. Taste!.
Its also a matter of an wine educated pallet; meaning tastes change over time & experience!.
And, it depends what its served with!. Stronger flavors often need more full bodied wines!.
What do I enjoy most (for a reasonable budget):
Cotes du Rhone
Chianti (or the very much dryer Chianti reserve)
Beaujolais Village
Pinot Noir
a spanish Roja
Rose d'Anjou
also enjoy the following whites:
Chassagne Montrachet (white)
Pouilly-Fuisse (white)
Pinot GrigioWww@FoodAQ@Com

domaine romanee-conti is good, if you are lucky enough to be able to afford it, or most any premier or grand cru burgundy!.
Any vintage champagne, real champagne mind you!.
Kim Crawford sauvignon blanc is probably my favorite white, and pretty affordable!.
Just about anything from chateauneuf de pape in the southern rhone part of France is pretty good!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would go with a malbec, chardonnay, shiraz, brunello, sangiovese and a dry riesling!. Those should pair good with anything from a big hearty steak to some seafood!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Personally, anything Kendall Jackson has out there I enjoy!. I like a good Port (Portuguese) with good chocolate and a great Chardonnay with seafood!. There again, go back to Kendall Jackson!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
