Can Grolsch-style/flip top bottles explode?!

Question: Can Grolsch-style/flip top bottles explode!?
I've recently started to brew my own Kombucha tea and am in the process of bottling it!. I've done some research online, and many of the brewers say that the Grolsch bottles are good to use!.

I read here and there that the rubber gaskets of the "cap" will release any "excess" CO2!. Will that prevent all or only most explosions!? This is my biggest concern; I don't want shards of glass flying around in my kitchen!.

If this is a major concern, how long can I keep the Kombucha in there!? I am currently setting the Kombucha out to build up a little fizz (I was told to leave it out for 2-3 days), then transfer it to the fridge, where it should be dormant and explosions shouldn't happen!.!.!.

Thank you!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I've never had one explode but I am careful to ferment to completion and then prime the bottles with just the right amount of sugar to prime it before bottling!. For corn sugar, that's 3/4 C per 5 gallons!. It varies with the kind of sugar you use!.

The rubber gaskets will not release excess gas!. Refrigeration will work but it is easier to adjust your recipe to insure safe levels of carbonation!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, anything with a pressure can explode!. If you have followed directions and allowed enough room for gases to collect and dissipate, then you should be ok!. I use the Grolsch bottles too and have had pretty good luck with them!. Chilling also retards the pressure build up!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am not familiar with Kombucha tea or the process of bottleing it!. I have been home brewing about ten years now and use alot of Grolsch bottles and 32 oz, swingtops for brewing beer!. Only one time have I blew up a bottle!. I was sitting home one night and I heard a loud noise and glass break!. I thought something hit the side of my house and broke a window!. I ran outside and found nothing!. After ten minutes of investigating I found one of five bottles blew up!. The lid didn't blow off, since it was fastened to the bottle, the whole bottle blew up!. It was a major mess!. I was afraid of the last four bottles!. I just handled them with gloves, sleeves, and safty glasses!. They were fine!.

The odds of one in ten years is good but to be better prepared just in case of next time!. I got wine boxes that are sectioned off inside with a lid!. That would keep the explosion contained!. You can get them at any store that carries wine!. I put my batches in them and set them in a plastic bin!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
