Question: What champagne is similar to Martini & Rossi's Asti?
My boyfriend and I love the taste and price of Martini & Rossi's Asti Spumante, but I wanted to surprise him with something a little more expensive for a special occasion. We usually find that for less than $15, and I was thinking of looking for something that was still less than $50. I've seen champagne in this price range, but I want something that tastes similar.

Asti Spumante is a sweeter italian sparkling wine. Any bottle of Italian sparkling will be similar in taste and in sugar level. Don't fall into the trap, however, that expensive means better. While I can tell you why a $40 bottle of true champagne is better than your Asti Spumante, you probably wouldn't like it. Which means that its not worth the money. Especially for a special occasion, get something you KNOW you'll both enjoy.

If you want to try something different, look for any of these words on an Italian sparkling wine bottle:

Franciacorta
Prosecco
Spumante
Sec

for French wines, look for something marked "demi-sec" or "dolce"
