How much alcohol must you drink to get drunk?!

Question: How much alcohol must you drink to get drunk?
I'm writing a story and was wondering if it's possible for someone who drinks fairly often, is about 180 lbs, and drinking scotch to get drunk within 20 or 30 minutes? Or would it take much longer than that? Also, how much would they have to drink? I don't have experience with alcohol, as I'm not a drinker and have never drank more than three sips. Thanks for any and all answers.

180 pounds person pounds down a fifth of Scotch, They will either be on the floor vomiting in 20 minutes, Or on their way to the hospital in 30 minutes....

Answer is yes.
Question is how drunk.
I've downed a full bottle of whiskey in 45 minutes more than once, thats proper drunk. Although I way about 230. Beer, not gonna happen in thirty minutes, take 10 pints. Wine, 30 minutes.. maybe.. can't see myself getting drunk on it in 20 though. Depends on body weight and tolerance. You are talking about very hardened drinking though, I haven't done it in more than 5 years. You wouldn't do it every day for long either.
can't really believe i'm answering this question :)

edit: I'm talking a full bottle of whiskey, neat, from the bottle, no glasses, no ice, no mixer, no nothing.

reedit: For your AVERAGE joe (is the character a drinker?) at 180, a half bottle in 20 to 30 mins is going to get him fairly drunk. Drinking at that rate it would take another 15 minutes to feel it. So he could have it down in 30 and be fairly well cut up in 45. Or down in 20 (rough on the gut, believe me) and cut in just over half an hour. mission accomplished - mind the step... ;)

Ok the glass thing, is he in a bar or at home/in his office/hotel room. In a bar he would be drinking from a whiskey glass and the barman WOULD have his eye on this guy, drinking that fast means trouble. At home/in the office/ hotel room he could be drinking out of the bottle, a glass or a coffee mug.

It is entirely possible for someone, male specificaly, to get drunk with Scotch within 20 to 30 minutes. If the person in mind is a regular drinker he would need more than someone who never drank before. Someone who has never drank before would need about 1 shot to become drunk within that time. But for a regular drinker, they would need about 3-5 shots of Scotch to be drunk.

It depends on the alcohol and the person on how fast you would get drunk. But yes this sounds good and probably 10 or more shots.

Whisky or hard liquor I drink straight out the bottle or poured into a glass (no shot sizes either). Half the bottle in 40 or so min and its stuupendouss.

It also depends on the persons size and also men can drink more than women . im pretty small so personally like 5 or 6 beers or 4 shots to start feeling a little tipsy

It depends on that person's past alcohol consumption, not their size
