No, usually bars are advertising such posts all the time, although most will be part-time.
Disagree with the first answer. Barback positions are almost always already filled by bartender hopefuls.
Try getting in the door to a restaurant as a busser or food runner. Then show interest in barbacking, once you've proven you're a reliable, hard worker.
