Why didn't the captain leave?!

Question: Why didn't the captain leave?
So I was watching the Titanic. But why didn't the Captain leave on one of the little boats? He just stayed there and died. Why? and did any kids died on the titanic?

Answers:

Captain Edward J. Smith was in command, he as per the tradition went down with the ship. Six of the seven children in first class survived, all of the children in second class survived, whereas less than half were saved in third class.

The captain goes down with the ship.
Cliche, and stupid..but apparently it was a common thing.

btw.. Yahoo! assumed you were referring to Captain Morgan, I believe.
You're in beer, wine and spirits..not movies.

The Captain is suppose to remain with the ship until all others are either off or beyond help.
