In the united states, schnapps is a flavored sugar syrup of low quality and usually low alcoholic content.

In the rest of the world, schnapps is a fruit brandy made from fermenting what fruit is grown locally and distilling it. It is a clear liquor of usually high proof with some flavor of the fruit surviving the distillation.

Fruit brandy, under any of it's many names, was the most common spirit made at home throughout most of history and throughout most of the world. This is because the fruit is on hand, and distillation was a fairly universal common practice done on the homestead. Distillation was used for many things, from purifying water, to creating essences for perfume and medicine, to preserving the value of a perishable product such as fruit (resulting in schnapps).

Most governments now control the production of home spirits either through outright prohibition or prohibition through unfair taxation. They do this for the purposes of raising money, controlling local and international trade, and imposing state mandated moral standards. This control has killed almost all schnapps production below the industrial level.

Schnapps IS the alcoholic drink, comes in a bottle. There are many different flavors, one of the more common is Peppermint Schnapps. There is also Peach and many others. It is often drank by itself, but many other drink recipes call for it.
