Is it possible to be a functional alcoholic and hold ur life together?!

Question: Is it possible to be a functional alcoholic and hold ur life together?
Answers:

No. A 'functional' alcoholic doesn't actually 'function'. What happens is they have people around them (enablers) who end up having to cover for them and clean up their messes...which only makes it APPEAR that they are functioning. If left on their own, they wouldn't succeed.

there are a few alcoholics that hold jobs, maybe a relationship,I doubt they are very happy, and it catches up with them, health, problems at home, work,I am a recovering alcoholic, sober 6 years, could not hold a job,I am 51,and am seeing some of my functioning alcoholic friends are falling, major health problems,no pot to piss in,now that I am sober .I am very happy, almost like it never happened,I went through hell, over and over, bottom line alcohol is no good to anyone.

been there,done that

there are different levels of alcoholics.. alcoholics are when you are dependent on alcohol. you could drink every day, or once a week. as long as you NEED to have it, or cant go without it. so yes, if you drink only a few times a week, you can very well hold your life together. your not necessarily an alchy unless your next drink is all you think about. it will take over a persons life.

You have described me. I haven't gone to bed sober in 22 years. I hold down a good job (same one for 11 years) and am responsible. My wife left me a while back with my kids because I refused to stop drinking for them. It was an easy decision. I was an alcoholic before I met her, it's selfish of her to expect me to change. It's possible and I'm living proof.

I'm a proud and functioning alcoholic

This no way you cant do it thing is a lie. I own a business and hold my life down fine. I will say it can take you down if you let it take over your focus but it is very possible to run your life being a functioning alcoholic. Dont let anyone lie to you.

Functional alcoholic maybe for a short period but the alcohol soon takes over, of course alcoholics seem to be normal while sitting down until they have to get up and walk, alcohol is their food therefore their bodies will and does deteriorate in the long term.

its possible. but not very likely

you will eventually lose something, friends family a job schooling car house something... it is extremely rare for an alcoholic to be able to keep it ALL together
