Chevas Regal is THE HIGH-CLASS blended scotch whiskey. Blended whiskey differs from Single Malt which is the same as Single Barrel. I love Rusty Nails - Chevas and Drambui. But many a Single Malt will put Chevas to shame.
To really appreciate the difference, sample Jack Daniels Black and Jack Daniels Single Barrel. As smooth as Jack Black may be, Jack Single Barrel is 10 times smoother.
Yes, it is probably the highest rated blended Scotch whisky. I do not know of any better known or better thought of Scotch blends. Some of the single malts may be considered better. But I think that has more to do with whether you prefer a blend or a single malt.

Yeah, I'd say its pretty well known. I wouldn't say its near as well known as Smirnoff is to vodka or Bacardi to rum, but I think most people who have been drinking for a decent amount of time most likely knows Chivas Regal.
