Why do people feel the urge to drink?!

Question: Why do people feel the urge to drink?
I know people who drink just every day. If not every day, then every other day. Every time I see them, they've got a beer in their hand, a glass of wine, a glass of scotch, or whatever you may have it. The point is every time I see them, they're consuming alcohol! Now, I don't know much about alcoholics or alcohol, considering I'm a social drinker. If I had the money, though, I think I would be an alcoholic myself. Is it safe to call these people alcoholics? Why do they drink the way they do? What leads them to this behavior? What goes through their mind? Are they that depressed that they feel they have to have a drink in order to cope with life? I feel binge drinkers (if that's what you wanna call them) drink the way they do to "ease the pain"-- to "drown the pain." I feel they are unhappy in their lives and look to alcohol to ease their minds-- to take their mind off things. These people I know aren't raging alcoholics (and I hate to refer them to that, but I call it as I see it). They're calm, laid-back, talkative, and generally happy. They do have their moments, though, where they'll catch an attitude, argue, and yell. I just wish I knew what goes through their mind. I am very confused. Please help!

Using the word "urge" indicates a current condition of abusing alcohol or a person predisposed to a future of its abuse. For those that do or for some reason (genetics) can not control their alcohol use, its just a matter of control. That [control] may be taught by professionals in an environment free from the alcohol and its temptations. But most drinkers are not of this predisposed condition of alcohol abuse.

The reason why people drink can fill a novel sized book. The fact is that most people that drink live happy and productive lives. For those that fall into some sort of "demon grip" that they can no longer function rationally, its a sad shame.

Many of us have a genuine enjoyment of the beverage in its many forms. For me its beer with an occasional sojourn into wine or spirits. We each have our reasons and the intoxicating effects can never be honestly denied. But keep in mind that the degree or level of intoxication allowed by any person varies as does our ability to deal with, that is, to control it rather than it controlling us.

Perhaps at some time you can express to your friends your thoughts. I do advise caution from being harshly judgemental or of a superior position in any way. Rather state your observances in a lighthearted way injecting a few stone-cold acts of their particular lifestyle. Always end on a happy note.

To life!

They are alchoholics. Your right, they probably do drink because they feel the need to ease the pain or just because they want to escape form reality.

alchoholics...

sometimes people also drink when they face things they do not want to face.

To be honest, drinking--in moderation--is supposedly good for you. Well, at least beer and wine (one or two a day of either, I believe) and possibly Whiskey and other hard liquors too, but I'm not sure about the harder stuff. Anyway, if someone you know only has one or two bottles of beer or glasses of wine a day, they probably aren't an alcoholic. In fact, if they're not drunk a lot of the time, they may not be alcoholics. Of course, some people will consider someone who has one drink every day or so an alcoholic and others may only consider someone who's almost always drinking an alcoholic...do you know what I mean?

Then again, if everyone you know who seems to be drinking all the time is in college, that's another explanation for it.

Someone close to you always having a drink. Well personally i may drink when i have a stressed out day and just want to ease off the tension but not all the time, only sometimes. Usually if you want to forget your problems with alcohol, it just does not work and you might end up even feeling worse the next day.
Some people feel they need some alcohol in their system so as they can feel that they can be able to function and go about their daily activities.
