Tobacco smoke is a physical particle, that is very sticky. It will stick to just about any surface, even glass. It is very difficult to get rid of the smell, because it is everywhere. If it is in fabric you have to wash it with soap and water. If there is a filter present you have to replace them. If you have flexible ducting you need to replace that too. If you have a central air unit you have to replace just about every part of that air handler.
Really it is easier to simply smoke outside. It is why I have a smoking porch.
Impossible for there not to be any smoke if he is puffing away on a lighted cigar. For some people cigars smell even worse than cigarettes and no amount of air freshener, candles or incense is going to cover it up.
Stuff a toilet paper roll with dryer sheets
