You may use a screw as in the video demonstration or a drill & bit combo if you have many to do. Also a hot pointed iron will burn a hole through it.

If you don't have and wish to purchase these items the nail & hammer idea is the best.

The best tool would be an awl - kind of like an ice-pick but with stronger steel.
If you want to use stuff you just might have lying around, then use a small nail and a hammer. Put the bottle cap on a block of wood. Drive the nail into the cap - remove the nail. Small, neat hole with little effort. If the nail leaves a raised "lip" around the hole, put the cap on something firm and tap the "lip" with the hammer. It should flatten down smooth.

Simple - place the top on a piece of old timber - then hammer a nail through it to make a small hole.

When you put the top on the timber - the inner side of the top should face up - like this (______)

A Spork.

hamer and nail
