If you drink beer brewed in Burton on Trent it is actually good for you! I can't remember exactly why, but it's something to do with the mineral content in the water. There are lots of micro breweries there, but also a big one called Coors and they brew lots of popular beer like Carling and Caffreys. I read a book about brittle bones etc and it said that drinking wine can take the calcium out of your bones but if you drink beer from Burton on Trent it can make bones stronger!
I drink beer
stella is not beer, it is not anything. Many of the punk lagers are just chemical concoctions suited only for chavs, of which stella is the worst, probably.
if U must drink lager (meaning 'stored') try lowenbrau, which is the nearest to a real pilsener lager as we can get here, though amstel brun is close.
but beer (ale infused with hops) has many faces now in the UK and micro breweries are doing very well. Still, Theakstons Old Peculier is one of the most consistent, adnams is great if you go to Southwold, but there are many others to titillate the taste buds. I like barley wine and meads, but that's another field altogether.
Back to Abbye types, go to Bruges and try Morte Subite (a lambic lager, get an old dusty bottle if you can, superb)
I am an alcoholic, professionally
Look for either real ale or imported Lager, depending on your taste.
Virtually everything else is bulk brewed in the UK - even many of the foreign name lagers.
The only Lager I can think of that's definitely imported is Sol, which is very nice stuff.
There again, it's down to personal taste & everyone is different. The best beer for you is the one you enjoy the most.
With so many small breweries supplying their own locality it would be nearly impossible to suggest one beer that is available nationally. Many drinkers do not consider lager to be a proper beer, but if you enjoy Stella then you might want to try Budweiser ( the Czech original also known as Budvar Budweiser, not the US import).
As an occasional drinker I too enjoy Hobgoblin and Spitfire, but Guinness is usually my first choice - just the one though!
I live in the US, and I like Bass. However, I'm under the impression that that is the UK's equivlent to US Budweiser. Also, what one considers "the best" another might consider awful. My husband's sister's husband thinks US Miller, Budweiser and their light conterparts are great beers. My husband and I think that Miller and Budweiser are the equivlent to beer flavored water. I like stouts and ales-- German imports (Warsteiner Dunkel being my favorite), etc. I like them strong and dark. I don't do lite beers. (I'm the thin woman at the bar with the 24 ounce ale or bock in front of me.)
RC: Thank you for your answer. We buy Hobglobin, but the others are new to me. There are a few places my husband and I know of that sell "exotic" beers or will order them if they can. As I also like Guinness (though I prefer two), I will look for the ones you listed.
As per the first answer-- Try the microbreweries. Those will probably have the best beer. There is one near us (Granite City for those living in the US; it's a small chain) that we frequent... Or, we did before I found out I was pregnant. I actually went to lunch there and had three beers (a stout, an ale, and mix-- all in the 24 ounce mugs. There is another one that we tried and didn't care for as the food wasn't too great and the beer was good, but flat. I'd be willing to go there again, just to try the beer. Both restaurants are not very vegan friendly, though.
(All this beer talk is making me bummed I don't have a bottle pumped for my eight-week-old son. I have a cold Guinness waiting for me in our basement fridge. We use it for groceries that we get a good deal on, but mostly we use it to chill wine and beer.)
Ale, unless you get a doppelbock or something quality from Germany. That being said, nothing wrong with some Tennent's Super.
If you are talking about REAL beer then Nimbus brewed by the Atlas brewery in Argyll.
Stella like most lagers is bland and boring. I would recommend a good ale like spitfire or hobgoblin.
HOBGOBLIN, from the wychurch brewery. it is a real cask ale with great taste and flavour
i dont like beer but lager on the other hand is nice
i liked carlings when i was there
