In corporate restaurants (this is from my experience), it takes a long time to become a bartender, it took me three years, most places want to start you as a server first to make sure you can do that. Privately owned are a little different, it only took me six months at my current job. It's worth the wait...bartending is so fun and way better money than serving. I only work part time now bc of school, so thats 3 days a week and I make 35 for bartending, my tips for the night, and tipshare from the servers...avg 175-200 a night. Great job for college students.
Get a job at a bar.
That's it. The bar's going to decide what they're looking for and most aren't going to hire someone with no experience. Every bartender I know started out as waitstaff at a bar&grill or restaurant and moved into the bar when an opening came up. It was all on the job, since most places serve a handfull of drinks and custom nonsense and beer. Your salary is going to range from crap minimum wage & tips to whatever they pay fancy bartenders at clubs in NYC/LA. I'm sure it's ludicrous. Realistically, bartenders don't make great cash and get few benefits unless they're working somewhere really nice.
Take a look at this site, which breaks down the hourly rate of a bartender, http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=…
The salary range differs depending on your years of experience as a bartender, and you can find the hourly rate by years of experience here, http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=…
Hope that helps.
