Ok, red wine people .................... =)?!

Question: Ok, red wine people .................... =)?
I just bought a bottle of Apothic Red Winemaker's Blend (it was on sale for 11.99 reg price is 21.99) and I really liked it actually. So, I went back to the store to buy another bottle and of course it's not on sale anymore. So I think I'm going to wait to buy more when it is on sale again, but in the same section it had a couple other winemaker's blends too.... Seven Daughters and Incognito and some others, I was just wondering about these wines. The Apothic seems almost 'sweet', although it's not really, just fruity flavored I guess but anyway I like that about it, the only thing about it I kind of don't like is it seems a little acidic....not to the taste really but when it's in my stomach I feel heartburn coming on kind of. So I guess I would like to know if all winemaker's blends are fruit forward and if so are there particular one's that are less acidic?

Answers:

I looked at their website and saw that it is a blend of Syrah, Zinfandel, and Merlot. California syrah and merlot are probably giving the wine its fruitiness and "sweet" flavors. The acid level is the same as any red wine blend you will get, around pH 3.6-3.8. Eat some bread and cheese while drinking and hopefully you won't have heartburn problems.

It may not be the acid in the wine that is upsetting, rather the tannin levels. It is a similar sensation but acid leaves the mouth watering while tannins leave the mouth dry. This wine has gone through malo lactic fermentation so the acids should be quite soft. But Zinfandel and Syrah can really bring a lot of tannins to a wine. They tend to mellow out with time, but the older the bottle, usually the more expensive.

Menage a Trois red wine is low in tannin and very fruit forward (and cheap). Look for some Merlot and gamay blends, the older the better and you should find some enjoyable wine.

I'm a winemaker

Less acidic typically depends on the types of grapes used in the wine and the region they're from, well at least those are just as important as winemaking styles.

Look for wines from more fruit forward regions to be less acidic. California, Chile and Australia are clear choices there.

Without knowing exactly where you live it's hard to make firm recommendations because what is available varies so widely, do you ever use Cellar Notes or Wine Searcher?

Riesling is a great white wine, nice and fruity, not acidic and considered a sweet wine. My favorite red wine is Lambrusco, by Reunite, also a sweet wine. Bully Hill is a nice brand, so is Jacob Matthews. I'm not a fan of YellowTail, and Yellowtail Riesling is just awful. I don't recommend it.

I love Yellowtail and Menage a Trois ! If youre looking for specific varieties that are less sweet rather than vintners Id suggest Pinot Grigio...It's more peppery than sweet...I dont care for it but you might like it ! Good luck !

you should not drink it is haram it causes people to have asma!!
i am not joking!!!

:=l ??????? ZOO Zoo ZOO PALS.... they make eating fun. :D

Ok..at the risk of sounding cheap and being made fun of, I will respond. I like the Red wine by Franzia....and yes, it is in a box. I had never tried "box" wine before until a friend of mine gave me a glass of it. I was pleasantly surprised, although I have since tried other brands and I like the Franzia the best. I also like the Franzia Blush. I have had wine give me heartburn to the point that it was so painful I thought I was having a heart attack. I did some research and found that mostly all wine contains sulfites, which can cause heartburn or chest pain in some people. I have not had a problem with this wine. Good luck!
