Sugar = calories, alcohol = calories. Try for a fruit forward wine that has less sweetness, or even no sweetness. You will perceive sweetness in a very fruity wine even though there is no residual sugar, in part because you associate fruit with sweetness and because alcohol imparts a slight sweetness on the palate. Menage a Trois is very fruit forward. Gamay is a good thing to look for on a bottle of wine if you want a light fruity red. It is made specifically to be fruity and light. Beaujolais is a French region that concentrates almost entirely on this style of wine from gamay grapes. Napa Gamay and California Gamay are not necessarily gamay grapes, but it refers to the same style in which the resulting wine is light and fruity.
