Why is red wine making me cough?!

Question: Why is red wine making me cough?
I don't usually get this with wine - be it white, rose or red but I picked up a bottle of Pinot Noir red on the way home after work today, having a glass now and I just can't stop coughing my guts out! Don't know if it's the wine that's causing it or what.... Has this happened to you before? Strange!

Sometimes when it's been on the shelf for a while the sugar crystalises and this causes 'lumps' in the wine which get caught in your throat.

Similarly the sediment will sometimes go to the bottom of the bottle which is why you should just give it a little nudge before opening (if screw cap). Leave cork bottles alone.

Hope this helps.

P.s. sometimes petrol stations and other outlets that are untrained in wine management store the wine in wholly inappropriate ways which can change the texture and qualities of the wine.

Try taking an antihistamine. It sounds like you are having a minor allergic reaction to the wine (hay fever like symptoms). it is quite common with red wine, it may be the tannins, pollen or the sulfates in the wine.

May well be the tannins giving you a wierd sensation/reaction
