Question: Brugal extra Viejo rum sealed but almost half empty?

I've come to possess a bottle of Brugal extra Viejo rum that was not nearly full, and upon opening the bottle, I noticed it was actually sealed (metal twist cap)! The taste wasn't what I would expect from a rum, and is not at all similar to Brugal Anejo rum, which I sampled next to it. How could a sealed bottle have lost so much liquid volume? Is it safe to drink?
