If you get really drunk can you forget what happened just before you even started drinking?!

Question: If you get really drunk can you forget what happened just before you even started drinking?
My friend claims she forgot everything at our school dance. She wasn't going to go but a group of people asked her last minute and she can't even remember who they were. She didn't start drinking until she got their though, apparently she drank a bunch of vodka in the bathroom after she got to the dance.

I'm in no way condoning underage drinking, I'm merely questioning if what she told me is truthful. Could she forget things that happened that night prior to her even starting to drink?

Answers:

Yes it is called "black out".

Teen drinker with parents permission.

Forgetting things while you're drinking is caused by the alcohol interfering with certain brain functions associated with memory and cognition. Forgetting things before you started drinking would be called brain damage.

Is it possible? Maaaaaaaaybe. Is it likely? No.

yes you can, but your friend is probably full of ****. Teen girls usually pretend to get completely smashed off of like 2 beers.

yes...been therew done that a few times....not fun the next day...i was still drunk and sick..i said never again...until next week

I suppose it's possible, however it's not typical that someone will forget what happened HOURS before they started drinking? It sounds to me like she's bending the truth a bit... especially if she's underage. She probably hasn't drank much in her life. It would be different if this was some 40 year old alcoholic we were talking about... THEN I would believe that she had forgotten the whole night. The more and more you drink, the more brain cells you kill. This can in turn lead to memory loss and nerve cell damage. Etc etc etc.
