Can whiskey help remedy a cold?!

Question: Can whiskey help remedy a cold?
I keep hearing people recommend it as a treatment for my cold. Not as in getting drunk, as in just having a shot or two. Is it a good idea?

What is is good for is making a person sleep. The sleep is helpful if for no other reason that to past time while your immune system fights the virus. In fact the opposite may be true, that is if you drink too much whisky it can weaken the immune system since it will kill white blood cells but not the virus.

It really isn't. Back in the good old days when there were few medicines around, alcohol was a popular way of making patients feel better because it will do just that fora shot time and they did not realise that they felt worse afterwards because of the alcohol and not in-spite of it. I am a great believer in trying out old remedies but some of them existed only because there was no alternative or not enough knowledge..applying heat to an ear-ache, for instance, makes things feel better for a while but it also encourages swelling and when the heat wears off the pain will be that much worse and so will the underlying cause.

The fumes of hot whisky in tea with lemon can act as a violent mover of phlegm and help clear up congestion for a time, but again, it is so violent when it works at all that the body is kicked into faster production in its efforts to sooth the irritation of the so called cure.

Warm tea with as much honey and lemon juice as you can enjoy in it will do far more good for you than whiskey, chicken broth with thinly sliced garlic added to it is also a worthwhile remedy, and they can both be used safely alongside modern remedies, which alcohol often can not be. If you have a fever then keep your food light and eat a little often, take plenty of liquids and get some rest..most of the complications people suffer from nowadays are the result of inadequate rest when we are ill..and far too many of the medicines available are designed to make us feel well enough to do too much. If you can not take time off to rest in then make sure that you give your boss or head teacher the cold as well and see how they stand up to it!

The only thing that alcohol is good for is a low iron count, fortified wines such as sherry, port and madeira ..a small glass a day..provide iron in a readily absorbed form.

well you should not get drunk the main thing is you should not drink too much of it. But whiskey provides you some kind of heat which is ok. A peg or two is ok other than that its getting drunk rather avoiding cold.

any time you wanna drink its a good idea even if its a shot or 2!!!! but yes it may help fight the illness
