Is it okay for us to drink red wine?!

Question: Is it okay for us to drink red wine?
i hear that it is considered beneficial to drink a little red wine occasionally as said here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/red-win…

my friend and i are at odds about this. She feels that it is very good for you and that other kids in europe do it and they are a lot healthier than americans. I say that its bad b/c we're both 16, underage, and are still developing (i hear alcohol hinders development?) and the health of european teens is due to the lack of deep fried trans fats.

so which one of us is right? since red wine isnt a very hardcore drink and it is to be taken in moderation, it cant be that bad, can it?

Answers:

The health benefits red wine gives you don't really start to matter until you're older than 16 (older than 21 too). The detriments to drinking when you're 16 are pretty severe, though.

I think you both have a little rightness to your arguments, however there is nothing wrong with drinking wine at 16. 21 is an arbitrary number put in place by some government official. the USA has always been more puritinical about its drinking laws, and many believe that these views are what has led us to our current state of alcohol abuse.

a glass of red wine has just as much alcohol content as a shot of straight liquor, you just drink it slower and looks classier. It most likely won't hinder your growth at all if you drink it in moderation.

Sure. I'm 15. And no it doesn't hinder development. I am 15 and I have parents permission to drink. It is fine. Try a a martini (flavored) I am drinkin one. But with cheap vodka...

In Europe it is Tradition to teach children responsible drinking at-usually-age 10.

Casey- I would like to add info to your statment. The Nordic and Baltic countries are common alcoholics but the rest of Europe is fine.

Yes and no

For many people it has health benefits.

For those prone to alcoholism it is simply an early start on an alcohol downward spiral.

Several European countries have the highest rate of alcoholism in the world.

There are many benefits to drinking red wine in moderation. From helping with digestion to antioxidants, it can be beneficial.

I am a wino.

Obey the law and discuss it with your parents. You don't need the health benefits until you are an adult.
