How do you go from a lifestyle that heavily involves alcohol to quitting cold turkey?!

Question: How do you go from a lifestyle that heavily involves alcohol to quitting cold turkey?
I just decided I have abused alcohol for too long & I am ready to give it up. I don't know how to live my life without it. Everything I do usually involved alcohol. Going to concerts, the beach, cooking, playing cards, even work. Does someone have any advice as to how I can seperate myself from this?

Answers:

just concentrate on all the negative effects alcohol can and will have on your life. whenever you get the urge to drink just think about how bad getting DUI would be. or think " do i really wanna risk my job over getting drunk" start doing something else. hit the gym instead of drinking at night. its hard at first. but after a while you will start to feel better.

As a recovered alcoholic for nearly 17 yrs you live one day, sometimes one moment at a time. This will become easier as time passes and you might want to give AA a shot. If you begin your detox and it's too much go to the hospital and get medical attention. Alcohol detox can kill you. Good hope for you; if I can do this anyone can.

Altru gave you a good, good answer.

There are three things I would like to add:
1. You have to accept that there will be craving, and you must be willing to tolerate that craving even though it takes time for it to go away.
2. You need to face every craving with a stern "I don't DO that anymore!"
3. Carry a water bottle with you always. Drink from that instead.

it can be done i went from drinking 18-24 pack everyday for 5 years to completely quitting. It wasent easy i was irritable to the point i wanted to hurt people but lifting weights and getting big is more important
