If 'beer kit' means the equipment required, then you can find quite a few DIY approaches; including:
- Get a used Turkey Fryer off of craigslist. The 7.5G pot makes an excellent boil kettle and hot liquor tank (HLT)
- Get a cheap 5-G plastic bucket with sealing lid for a fermenter.
- Get a 10G thermos for a mash tun.
- Build a stir plate from a used computer fan (just finished this project $20 vs $100 to buy one)
(see link below for other DIY ideas)
Alternatively, if 'beer kit' means the ingredients, then there are really three approaches:
- Buy a Mr Beer Kit - a cheap way to get decent beer.
- Follow an all-extract or partial-extract recipe
- Follow an all-grain recipe

It might be cheaper to buy a ready-assembled kit but you can get food-grade plastic buckets from large bakeries. You will have to buy food-grade tubing too. You will need to buy brushes, a hydrometer, a balance, airlocks, and a few other things. If you want a turkey-fryer to boil your wort, do NOT get one with an aluminum pot, which is what most have. Stainless steel and enamel are the way to go, if you don't want your beer to have a metallic taste.
I'd suggest getting a stock kit* and a copy of the book Brew Ware* if you want to make your own gear.I've made my own wort cooler that works so quickly that my friends think I am pulling their legs. A lot of my scrap wood gets turned into beer cases.
Give a man a beer and he drinks for a day. Teach a man to brew and you've created a monster.
*try eBay
There are many supply sites where you can find the parts and build your own kit.
