Some people have a genetic disposition to addiction. What or even why and how a person becomes addicted to a certain thing whether be food, alcohol, or medication/drugs is not now known. There are certain co-factors believed to be both learned and predisposed. These are depression and anxiety and low brain function related to neurotranmission. This last element covers the nature versus nurture component of physiological theory. This just means people with no predisposition may learn the actions and habits of alcoholics when young and their brains accept these as normal... the result is alcoholism.

Weakness!!

People say it is a disease but personally I do not think that at all, that word "disease" is just making an excuse to make the person feel better about the situation. Easier for people to feel sorry for them!!

Anyone with an addiction would already have an addictive personality on top of that they would also have low self esteem to be able to confront and talk about there problems that have lead to the need of the over consumption of their poison!!

Anyone who is has a problem is selfish and can only get out of that hole by admitting they have a problem. There is no point you telling them that they have a problem, they can only seek help and start the road to recovery when they themselves find and notice they have a problem!!

Live in an area with alcohol problems and have some close friends who are alcoholics!!

Short answer: no one really knows. There may be several reasons but no one is sure yet of an exact cause. You can google "alcoholism causes" and do some reading on it, and you should. If you have an alcoholic parent, your chances of becoming one are better than most people's, so the more you know about it the better chance you have of recognizing any danger signals in yourself and doing something about it before it gets to be a real problem.

In my case , I was born with a predisposed gene to addiction, my 1st drink @ the age of 12 I got drunk.
32yrs later I got sober, and life has been good .
Your dad had a disease, and it killed him, and for that I am Truly sorry.
Another way is a progressive way, you drink a lot, and one day you cross the invisible line, and their is no coming back
Once you are that way, you will always be, the only way to win is don't drink

17 yrs sober

its an illness,im sorry to hear about your dad .it does tend to be genrtic ,so it does run in familys, ive lost several friends to alcohol x

You just become addicted to drinking and how it makes you feel, it's like an escape from your life sometimes.

Really sorry to hear about your dad.
Unfortunately alcoholism is an illness they don't choose it.

They are born that way. They are OK until they taste booze and that is the end for them.
