Beer is called bier in German and Dutch and sounds just exactly the same. Makes ordering a lot easier even when you're drunk in the US, Holland, Germany, England.....

It comes from the latin "bibere" which means "to drink"

And I guess the other term associated with the origin of the word "beer" is "cervisia" which is where the word "cervesa" comes from.
