That depends on what kind of margarita you'll be making. If you're going to make one using sour mix or a store-bought mix, you'll be fine with the cheap stuff. Those kind of mixes contain A LOT of sugar, though, so you're going to have a calorie bomb on your hands. I haven't made a margarita with mix in years, but I remember using Jose Cuervo Silver and it was fine.

If you're going to be making a classic margarita, which I highly recommend [tequila, fresh lime juice, agave nectar], you'll want something slightly more high-end. At my bar we use Milagro Silver because it's got a nice, smooth taste and doesn't cost a lot. Bonus: it's packaged in an absolutely beautiful bottle that'll look great on your home bar. As a general rule, don't use a tequila that costs over $40 in a margarita because it's just going to be a waste. I've also used 1800 silver, which costs about the same as Milagro, and thought it was adequate.

Whatever brand you end up deciding on, it's best to get the silver [or blanco] variety. Silver tequila is cheaper than resposado and anejo because it's hasn't been aged as long and usually has a harsher taste. The lime juice and agave [or sour mix] will more than cover that up.

Gold is best for margaritas or any cocktail.
Silver for shots.
Anejo (aged) for sipping.

It's best to use the cheapest one, being that the Margarita mix will mask the taste, of the tequila.

The least expensive white tequila is the best for margaritas.

Gold...
