can someone teach me how to buy wine?!
i have never drunk in my life, but i want to buy a bottle of chateau yquem sauternes for someone. I dont understand why the price range for this is all over the place.. What is the significance of the date? And what else should I know...?

Think about wine as a living thing. Every vintage is going to be different, depending on many things that year; climate etc. All of those differences can then change over the course of time, in the bottle. If you are spending that much $, I would check out wine spectator on line, and compare the different vintages side by side. Especially because the person you are getting the gift for probably knows which vintages are better than others (or have higher ratings etc.)
