I'm a recovered alcoholic in my 5th year of recovery thanks to Alcoholics Anonymous, I now work in an alcohol rehab clinic.
While I'm not saying you're an alcoholic you're showing all the usual self denial signs of alcoholism, have you tried cutting down and then go back to it? have you tried stopping all together? if you have and you can't it might be worth your while going to your local AA meeting and just listen to what they have to say, you can find it through my link.
In the meantime to help you make up your mind, have a try at this short questionnaire:-

A pint or 2 of quality ale is fine as is a shot or 2 a day. As long as you don't drink fifths every day or get drunk very often. Room spinning OK, vomit all over bathroom, not OK.
you can cut back bit by bit and then quit it all.
for the sake of your health.
Ask yourself this question first. Why do you drink that much in the first place.Habit, boredom, company?
Once you figured it out get a hobby.Drinking buddies are not much help once you get stopped on a Traffic stop. For the price of a few drinks you can buy some terrific books or things for a hobby.I'm building right now an electric guitar just so I can say I did it and I don't play.In the past I have build furniture. This beats a hangover by a mile.Plus books you can read again. With out thinking of the monetary aspects.Sometimes people will ask you to build something for them. You make more permanent friends this way.
