How long will an unopened bottle of Jameson last?!

Question: How long will an unopened bottle of Jameson last?
We received a bottle of Jameson from family when our son was born (in honor of his name, etc.) We would really like to keep the bottle until he is 21. If we keep it unopened will it last? Still taste well? Age properly? Also, should we really get it sealed?

Answers:

Unopened it should last at least the 21 years you're planning without any noticeable degradation - just keep it upright and in a dark place cool place, preferably in the original box. Won't age or change in flavor though...

I did a similar thing when my son was 21, but with a late harvest wine. We were living in the wine country of the Sierras when he was ~1 year old and were drinking this wonderful botrytised Chardonnay, liquid gold, from this small vineyard. They were running out and we bought their last few bottles and thought the same thing too - save one for him... We had a huge birthday dinner for him on his 21st, opened the bottle and it had deepened into a rich honeyed tone full of apricots and vanilla. It brought tears to everyone's eyes...

> If we keep it unopened will it last?
Yes. Even an opened bottle will last a century if the cap/cork is replaced properly. Keep it away from a lot of heat or vibration and you'll be fine. The only risk is some very minor evaporation and an decent cap will prevent that.

> Still taste well?
Yes.

> Age properly?
No. It won't age at all. In 21 years it will taste essentially identical as it does today. In 50 years it will taste the same as today. Whisky doesn't age like wine, if it's not in a barrel whisky won't age. Period.

> Also, should we really get it sealed?
Sealed by what? You're not going to improve it and sealing it won't protect it from anything. Even if you were aging wine, you wouldn't want to seal it. The environment and how you lay it would be the most important thing.

If you want something that will age 21 years, you're either going to have to buy wine (and you'll have to buy one that's designed to age) or a barrel of whisky. You could put a standard bottle into a barrel, they sell some online, but it's a bit of a gamble as to what it will turn into in 20 years.

The bottle wont really age anymore, hence a 5yr old scotch kept around the house for 15yrs does not make it as good as a 20yr old scotch. All aging for fine spirits is done in the barrel. That being said, I see no reason why the bottle can not last that long. Stored properly with that much alcohol content nothing should happen to the liquor.

You should definitely be able to keep it at least that long, and longer. Check out this article for advice on storing your whiskey:

It talks about Scotch whisky, but it should apply just as well to Irish.

I'm not an expert on Jameson but I don't see why it wouldn't last. Its not like wine. I would say it would be fine. Even if it will go off, you still have a lovely gift to give on his 21st. Perhaps google the question? I can usually find an answer that way.

Jameson whiskey??

At about 70 degrees proof it will last virtually forever. Keep it stored upright in a cool, dark place, free from vibration and it will continue to mature and beome even smoother etc!

it will last a long time trust me alcohol never goes bad.
