What are the chunks of stuff that float in a bottle of ale, but then disappear when you pour it?!

Question:

What are the chunks of stuff that float in a bottle of ale, but then disappear when you pour it?

It's the "grainy" or "chunks" of stuff in a bottle of Ale, but I don't ever see it in Lager beers. Is it bad for you? Is it harmless? I notice it in the bottom of Ale bottles, but when I pour the Ale into a glass, it seems to dissappear. What is the stuff??

Answers: more than likely yeast, i homebrew. if you have stuff in the bottom of the bottle, pour slowly, and leave about an ounce in the bottom, espically with micro and heavy brews. the yeast will not hurt you, its actually rather good for the digestive system. it does change the taste of the beer though, so you are not meant to drink it as far as tasting what the brewer wants you to. you can also help this by letting any micro or heavy brews sit and settle once you get them home a day or two should be good. yeast maybe? it's yeast
