I dont' drink the stuff but am going to buy some for a friend's birthday. What is the nicest available in Australia?


Answers: Port did originate in Portugal where there are many fine houses. But... there are many other countries throughout the world which also produce a product which we all refer to as port. Australia makes fantastic ports, mostly tawnies, but there are also fine ruby and vintage dated ports. (In Portugal, vintage ports are approximate in vintage, meaning if it says 10 yr tawny port, it's approximately 10 years, give or take...The finest Australian wine by far is called Penfolds, so I would start with their ports. Alternatively Go To A Classy Hotel Or Restaurant Which Dose Portuguese Cuisine And Ask Their Wine Waiter. port comes from portugal. there are ruby ports (deep red, fruity), and tawny ports (rust colored, nutty). some good brands are grahams, dows, fonseca, and warres. there are also vintage ports, which are the most expensive, like dows 1961. good choices are fonseca bin 27 (ruby), grahams 20 year (tawny), and warres 1979.
