Read it in this mornngs news paper. Sadly, so many under 21's and indeed some over 21's, show a complete lack of maturity and I most certainly agree that alcohol should not be sold to under 21's. some will get around it, but it sounds like a positive move. If only they would do the same with cigarettes.

Not heard about it, but it does sound good. No that can't be happening! i'll just get my dad to buy it for me then or just go clubbing. That's not really going to happen is it? I mean, the drinking age is 18 so there's no connection really... Like they always have. Stand in large groups outside the off licence and pressure people to go in for you!. truth am not worried am 39 so am all right Sorry X Cindy It could be unlawful in itself!

Alcohol can be legally bought from the age of 18. To restrict sales in certain places based on age would conflict with the new age discrimination laws! prob the same way they get round it now!! when i was young we made our own beer and wine out in the barn ,we always had a crock or 5 gallon water bottle ( the kind you put on water coolers) bubbling away ridiculous,i could understand it if it were for under 18s. never agreed with the voting age being reduced to 18 from 21,but if the law says your old enough to vote at 18 then your old enough to purchase alcohol.anyway are they going to stop young men and women between the ages of 18 &21 going into pubs and clubs?. Can you still go out though?

don't really go to the off license anyway.. rather drink in a pub or a bar...

I would actually hate it if turned 21+ in bars though..

:-( thanks for putting me in a bad mood.. its fridays aswell.... At present the legal age for buying alcohol is 18. However it is very difficult to judge the age of teenagers and young adults and unless they have ID with proof of age, then at the store where I work, we will refuse the sale if the person concerned appears to be under 21. This may seem harsh, but if caught, not only does the company get fined, but the assistant does too and it's a lot of money which the company does not pay on their behalf.
We also have problems with underage kids giving money to other customers so they can make the purchase for them. It is though, an offence for a customer to do this.
I don't know what the answer is, kids always seem to find a way to get what they want. My daughter has been allowed the occasional glass of wine with a meal at home since she was 12. She's 15 now and still has the occasional glass, but otherwise is not bothered if she drinks or not and doesn't need alcohol to have a good time at parties with her friends. Because of the harrassment from trading standards major supermarkets will not serve anyone who does not look 21 unless they have id to prove they are 18. it is not law just company policy . The shops are implementing a under 21 policy which means they have to ask you for ID if you look under 21, but they can not refuse to serve you if you are over 18
