Question:

Black and mild vs. romeo and juliet/montecristo?

What are the differences of a black and mild cigar and a romeo and juliet. i was a cigarette smoker until i was introduced to "blacks" by a friend. now that i am in too cigars, i was wondering what are the differences between a cheap cigar and a more expensive one. how are the flavors differ? quality? why are they heck expensive? please be detailed.

Answers:

A black and mild has more in common with a cigarette then with a real cigar. They are completely machine made, with paper made from tobacco as the wrapper and chopped tobacco for the filler. A real cigar is made entirely by hand, with large pieces of tobacco rolled or bunched and wrapped in another piece of leaf. The real cigar is a very labor intensive product, with many people involved from start to finish. The tobacco is planted and harvested by hand, cured and aged for anywhere from a few months to many years, bunched and wrapped by specially trained workers and then aged again as a whole cigar. The amount of time and effort put into a premium cigar, along with the need for whole tobacco leaves instead of any available pieces, explain the large price difference between a black and mild or a swisher sweet type cigar and a romeo & juliet or a montecristo.
