How do you make Basque Sangria?

Miam!

Answers:

It's very easy to make, but it IS important to let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours for the flavors to blend properly. This recipe will serve 4. It's fine to double the quantities, but you may need a punch bowl instead of a pitcher.

Wash 2 large juice oranges and 1 large lemon. Slice the lemon and one of the oranges and put the slices in a pitcher. Add 1/4 cup sugar. With a long spoon, gently mash until the fruit yields some juice and the sugar is dissolved. Add the juice of the other orange (note: sometimes I use the juice of 2 oranges--it's your call), 1/4 cup triple sec or Grand Marnier, and a 750-ml. bottle of medium-bodied, fruity red wine. Don't waste an expensive or "special" wine on sangria--a decen't inexpensive wine is perfect.

Cover the pitcher or punch bowl and chill at least 4 hours (and up to 12). When you're ready to serve it, stir 6 to 8 ice cubes into the mixture briskly. By this time the citrus slices will be all purple and not very pretty any more. So you could slice another orange and/or lemon and add a slice or two to each glass. But I'd stay away from recipes that tell you to add strawberries, peaches and all kinds of other fruits. It's not authentic, and after all, you want a refreshing summery drink, not a fruit compote. I hope you give it a try!
