Do those metal wine collars that fit around the neck of the bottle actually improve the taste?!

Question:

Do those metal wine collars that fit around the neck of the bottle actually improve the taste?

I don't know if that is what the real name of it is, but it is a silver clamp that fits around the bottle neck and supposedly improves the flavor. Someone brought one to a party. I tried the red wine with and without the collar, and I observed no difference. Have you tried one of these? If so, what did you think?

I had a feeling the salesman who convinced him to buy it was making it all up.

Answers:

It's just a drip catcher. It has nothing to do with the flavor. When you think about it, it doesn't even *touch* the wine...how can it have any effect on the flavor?
You figured out the BS right away.
