Why do some bars not have price menus for their drinks ?!

Question:

Why do some bars not have price menus for their drinks ?

It's so hard to try new drinks unless you know their name, and sometimes I don't know if I can afford a drink or not so I just don't order it ! Why can't bars just have menus ? is it okay to ask the barattender/waiter about prices?

no actually most of these bars are college bars, nothing fancy, but still some drinks are expensive... like i've always wanted to try jack and coke but im usually too lazy to find out the price cuz it's not on the menu so i just get vodka instead

Answers:

jack and coke is usually a cheap and easy to make drink. you can make it cheaper by asking for "rail" whiskey, instead of name brand stuff like jack.
here's why bars can't have menus - there are literally thousands and thousands of drinks that can be made in a standard bar, this of course would make a menu a 500 or more page book. and this book, like menus at resturants, would need to be updated often. Such as every time the price of just one brand or bottle changed. Or every time a new drink is invented (at least one new drink, if not many more, is invented daily, usually a shooter.) Or every time the overhead for the bar increased, or every time that min. wage went up.
When a bar actually has a menu, it is not so much a list of drinks they can make as it is a list of drinks they want you to order. They put drinks in the menu and it basically makes the bartender's job easier, and because the best drinks are generally on that menu it makes the bar more money. If you're low on cash, i suggest staying away from bars with menus. If there is no menu and only one bartender, chances are the drinks are cheaper.
as far as not knowing what to order, just look up drinks online, research for yourself. here are some sites that may come in handy- www.webtender.com - www.BarNoneDrinks.com - www.MartinisOnline.com - www.DrinksMixer.com - www.Bartender.com - www.BarMedia.com

oh yeah, almost forgot, It is always ok to ask the bartender product and price related questions. IT IS THEIR JOB TO HELP YOU. They are working for tips and the only way to get a good tip is to do a good job.

and finally if you really need to know like yesterday what kind of drink is right for you, here are my suggestions
-Fuzzy Navel (collins glass filled with ice, 1 oz. peach schnapps, fill with OJ
- (if you're a lady) Fizz drinks
ex.) Banana Fizz (collins glass, filled with ice, 1 oz. Banana cordial such as 99 bananas or crem de banana, 2 oz. sweet and sour, fill with club soda)
ex.) Sloe Gin Fizz - same except use 1 oz. Sloe Gin (a cordial)
any cordial may be used for a fizz. (cordials are sweet and usually contain less alchohol)
-Daiquiri (chilled cocktail glass, 1 oz. light rum (rail rum for cheaper drink) 2 oz. sweet and sour, stirred in ice poured into glass without ice)
-Blind Russian (tall rocks glass filled with ice, 1 1/2 oz. Vodka, 1/2 oz. Khalua, filled with Bailey's Irish Cream (note - you can order a white russian as well, which is cheaper because instead of bailey's you would just use bar cream, but that stuff is non-alchohlic))
i hope you find what you're looking for.
