Answers:

Alsace is a fairly big place. It is a wine region, not just a town or village, so there is a lot of choice and you can find many producers. Hugel, probably the most famous and decorated of all the Alsacien producers, is an obvious choice, as suggested above, though it may be quite a hike for you to get there and Hugel wines are among the most expensive in North-East France (not to mention that every Tom, Dick and Harry visiting the region wants to go to see the Hugel presses and the ancient barrels).

My advice would be to wait until you get there before you decide where to visit. Most of the producers will be happy to let you have a stroll around their property with them and, if you play your cards right, will give you a tasting and a bite to eat afterwards, in the hope that you will spend a fortune on their reserve wines.

Once you arrive at whichever village you are staying in, have a word with the managers or maitres d'hotel to find out which local producers they would recommend. If I am on holiday, rather than business in a wine region, I try to use locals' knowledge rather than foreign reputation guide my tastings. I have found dozens of producers of extraordinary wines that do not produce enough to export, simply by asking nicely in the village bistro or general store.

Of course it's nice to visit the famous names, but I can guarantee that you will have a better day if you are being given a personal guided tour by the owner and winemaker himself, on your own little voyage of discovery through a previously uncharted vineyard.

Best wishes for your trip and I hope you find something special!
