Depending on local vocabulary, you would use either a cocktail glass or a rox glass. They are the same thing. They should hold approx. 6 ounces.

To make a gin and tonic, fill your rox glass with ice. Pour in gin until it level with the top of the ridges on the lower half of the glass. True rox glasses will also have a ridged bottom. This should give you about 1 - 1.25 ounces of gin. Then top it with Tonic.

And remember, never, ever shake a gin and tonic. Any mixed drink with a carbonated soda doesn't need to be shaken, the carbonation does it for you. It will also make the drink flat.

Serve it in a regular cocktail glass.

a rocks glass

You can use a rocks for a strong one, a highball for slightly weaker (taller as well) and a bucket if requested or a double.

Definitely use a rocks glass

i think collins glasses are very classy looking. they are about 12 oz and very tall and skinny. straight up and down.

My book calls for a collins glass 8 - 14oz
The other book calls for a highball glass 8 - 10oz

A pitcher
