What does a cup/glass/ do the liquid?!

Question:

What does a cup/glass/ do the liquid?

does it "contain" it,"hold" it...etc. i'm looking for the most descriptive word.

Answers:

You particularly mentioned cup/glass and not bottle/ container, etc....... In that case, contain, hold, envelope, encapsulate, etc. would all be inappropiate. A cup or glass is open at the top, allowing evaporation to take place, and eventual loss of liquid. Therefore it cannot contain or hold the liquid, only temporary! To envelope or encapsulate means to surround, or encircle, and prevent escape, which would require a sealed container, such as a bottle with a cap. This wouldn`t fit within the parameters of a cup/glass, as in you original question. It might sound funny, but actually the correct word would be something like "restrain", but that too would be only temporary.......Anybody else??........Good question.
