The first can opener was invented nearly 50 years after the tin can was introduced (can in 1810; can opener in 1858). "Tin canisters" used have labels advising people to open them with a hammer and chisel.

The can, and the first ones were made from glass.

The can opener, but no one had any idea what it was, and it was feared.

Then came the can, and people despaired, longing to gain entry to the hidden goodies within.

One day, a can opener attacked an innocent can, tearing it open, and mankind realized its awesome potential. Years were spent trying to domesticate these wild can openers. Eventually, they were brought under control, and the people were able to enjoy their delicious canned goods.

There was much rejoicing.
