Answers:

If you want to try white wine, try Sauvignon Blanc. They are a bit sweet, fruity, and light. Not oaky (which is a real word) or dry like Chardonnay. Try Hogue Suavignon Blanc ($10) or Chateau St. Michelle Sauvignon Blanc ($12).

As for red, if you want non-dry, non-oaky wine, Pinot Noir is probably the best choice for you. Pinot Noir tends to be fruity in both smell and taste, light to medium in body, and not oaky. If you really want a good Pinot Noir, you need to pick the ones from California - Napa, Sonoma, or Central Valley/Paso Roble, or from Oregon.

Unfortunately, to get the really good wine, you need to expect to spend at least $30-40 per bottle. I used to call Pinot Noir "Watered down Merlot", and I still call the cheap Pinot Noir by that name. More expensive Pinot Noir, on the other hand, are much better, with good complexity and great flavor. For mid price range, try Benton Lane ($20), Foley ($25), Siduri (cheap one, $25), and Robert Mondavi ($25). If you like these, then definitely try something more expensive such as Hartfort Court ($45), Breaux Freres ($45 cheap, $75 single vineyard), Pennar Ashe ($45-55). You will not be disappointed if you acquire the taste of Pinot Noir.
