I need to know what makes wine good, because i can't find one that i like?!

Question:

I need to know what makes wine good, because i can't find one that i like?

I see people drinking wine and telling me how it complements this meal or that meal and I feel like an idiot for hating all of it!

Answers:

ok lets cut the crap: wine is an acquired taste. the more you drink it, the more you'll learn to like it.

you need to know a little about it before you start drinking. i'm going to list some wines for you from sweetest to richest.

ice wine (super sweet, late harvest. think of a grape thats overly ripe, know how they taste SUPER sweet? too sweet to enjoy eating a whole bowl? this is what ice wines are made of.) this is normally served as a dessert wine.

reislings-sweet white wine. slightly effervecent in some brands. a good one to try for cheap is "relax reisling"

chardonnay-go for one that someone tells you is oaky. this usually has a toffee or buttery aftertaste (finish).

red wines-tend to be earthy and hearty. some are spicy some are flat, others are slightly sour on the palate.

the MOST important thing to remember when trying wine is to drink something you LIKE. don't worry about fancy tasting notes or what some people SAY you'll like. remember to vary your country of origins, too. try wines from france, spain, italy, south africa (south africa produces some especially light and crisp white wines and spicy reds), chile (malbec), argentina (good reds), california, canada (ice wines) and portugal all make great wines.

a good suggestion is to go to your local wine shop and say "i want to find a wine i'll like." the wine shop will let you sample several different wines and will be able to direct you to a possible match based on the responses you give to each sample.

if no wine works for you, try champagne! then you can always say 'oh thank you but i only drink champagne!' :)

cheers
