How many drinks does a bartender in a club know?!

Question:

How many drinks does a bartender in a club know?

How about a high end bar, a hotel or a dive bar. Do they know about 1,000 in a club?

Answers:
I would say 500.

Keep in mind that most drinks are a variation of other named drinks, or drinks with no name.

Example:

One shot of whiskey - Whiskey clean
One shot of whiskey with ice - Whiskey on the rocks
One shot of whiskey with a splash of water
One shot of whiskey with coke
One shot of whiskey with beer - Harvey Wallbanger
One shot of whiskey with tonic
One shot of whiskey with a twist of lime
One shot of whiskey with club soda
One shot of whiskey with sprite
Doudle shot of whiskey

So if you take the double and add the same ingredents technically you can make almost 20 drinks. Just think about the wines, rum, scotch, vodka, cognac, gin, tequila, or brandy.

If you use the same basic principals, as the whiskey you might be able to make 150 drinks without trying, or without any formal training.

Another example. Whats the difference between a Salty dog and a Greyhound?; The Salty dog has a salted rim.

Most bars these days have recipes on there computer that can tell the bartender how to make a drink, depends on how may recipes there are in the computer determins how many types of drinks that bartender can make. If theres 20,000 recipes on the computer then I'm assuming that the bar tender can make 20,000 drinks.

Have you ever had a drink in a bar and it was soooo good. Then you went back to that same bar the next day and ordered the same drink and it did not taste the same, or it was nasty. Does that mean the bartender can not make a drink or did they us a different variation of the same drink?, or did they use a cheaper alcohol.

Not trying to be funny, but some bartenders can not make a drink off the top of their head but clames that they can make any drink that anyone want just as long as they have the ingredients. How do they do that. I wonder how many drinks I can make If the customer told me how to make it.

Try asking for a weired drink at the bar. You probably get the drink. But watch how long it takes to get it, What are they doing?, Are they researching the drink?, Are they asking other people how to make it?, Will they eventually get the courage to ask you how to make it?

No disrespect to the true bartenders, that have years of experance, and can make hundreds of drinks of the top of their heads. Keep up the good work. Never had a bad drink.

Hope this helps

That would depend on the bartender, I am sure they have a very large repertoire, but there are also resources available. Mixology books and "recipe" card files that are very popular behind the bar.

could be but doubt they can recall the names.

most bartenders know about 20 drinks. Its those speciality drinks that are not ordered frequently that they do not know. One time I went into a bar and ordered an Alabama Slammer, and the bartender said that they did not has the stuff to make it. When I told her how to make it and saw the bottles behind the bar, she got upset with me and did not serve me. Always try to insult the bartender
