If you do not know how to make a drink that a customer orders, would it be okay to ask the customer whats in it in a nice way and admit you don't know and would like to be enlightened and are very interested in producing that drink for them?

you should have a recipie book in the bar, look up the drink or tell them you dont know the ingredients and they will probably tell you how to make it,,
You should right now, this very minute, find on the internet recipes for drinks. If you're not familiar with it, ask, if neither of you knows, offer up something you think they'll like. or just offer up something in the first place.
ask them-the worst that can happen is they'll laugh at you, but they'll still want their drink so they'll have to tell you the ingredients anyway!
As a bartender, most people either drink popular/basic drinks or drinks on your drink menu (which I sure hope you know how to make). If someone however orders something I don't know how to make I usually say something on the lines of, "(drink name), remind me what's in that real quick..." and then after they tell you, you can usually figure out how it is mixed based on the ingredients.
If that fails, many P.O.S. systems have drink recipes stored in them, or consult a bar recipe book, or ask a cobartender if you're not too busy.
Ask for help from the other staffs. Check online for the recipe. Once a foreign customer ordered a food which is not in the menu, so I asked him what kind of ingredients of the food and I created a new food for him, and he likes it!
i'll make as i know... orelse say openly i dont know to make a drink which your mentioing about...
As a bartender, if I came across a drink I wasn't familiar with, I'd usually say something like, "a XXX...you know I'm not familiar with that, do you happen to know what's in it?" And if they didn't, I'd ask if it was sweet, what color it was, if it was fizzy, etc. If I couldn't figure out what exactly the drink was, I'd recommend something similar along those lines. Hey, you can't be expected to know EVERY single drink out there!
This has happened to me a few times. More often than not you'll probably know the drink by another name. Nothing wrong with asking them what's in it .
If it is one you've never made before, tell'em thanks.....that's a keeper.
Good luck and always over pour.
