Answers:

In the wines of Rioja you have sometime have the grapes of Graciano and Garnacha (Grenache) in the blends.

Grenache is used mainly in the South of france and specifically the Rhone, which in my opinion is the bargain region of France.

What you also must consider, is if the majority of Shiraz you have drunk is from Oz, then remember that the different regions produce different styles.

Shiraz (Syrah) is a main blending grape in Rhone wines, but please do not let that put you off.

My tips for grapes not often seen are Bonardo and Tannat. They are being produced mainly in Argentina, and examples of these grapes can be found in the Co-op and round about £5.

Also look at Pinot Noir, especially Chile, as the home of Pinot, Burgundy in France, can be quite expensive.

Tempranillo, the main grape of Rioja, is grown extensively throughout Spain, and two regions to look out for are Navarra, and Somantano.

Also Italian wines, mainly the north produce wines that may be up your street. Try Barbera wines, Primitivo, and Uva De Troia (I think that is the correct spelling).

Although I drink new world wines, the old world really does produce the better wines.

Enjoy
