Need to know about probation for alcoholics?!

Question:

Need to know about probation for alcoholics?

Okay, this involves my brother, he has a serious alcohol problem. a couple months ago he got arrested for public drunkness, and went to jail for the night, my parents bailed him out. which was stupid, since he needs to learn a lesson. well today he went to court again and they gave suspended his Driver Liscense for 1 year, and put him on probation. heres what Im wondering. will they test him for alcohol while on probation during the 1 year, or what. cause he told me that he just cant get in trouble, but I dont believe that. and to top it off he is drinking tonight with friends like an idiot, right after he got out of court.

At this time theree are no test out there to check if someone drank alcohol. He might be tested for other drug use. It sounds like he is an alcoholic. You might try and consider getting him to go to AA. But if he is not ready to admit he has a problem no matter what you do it`s not going to help him. He has to want to help himself. A lot of people are afraid to admit they could be an alcoholic. Mostly because they are uneducated about alcoholism. People feel that it is something that they can control but in reality it is a disease. It`s not ther fault. If you look at your family history are there any other members that have problems with alcohol? He could have inherited this. If someone gets cancer it`s not their fault and it works the same way with alcohol. He is not a bad person and if he tried to look at it as a medical condition he might consider getting help. You and your parents should consider going to a support group called Al anon. Here is a # that your parents can call to get more info (800) 245-1377. I lost a brother to alcohol and drug abuse so I know how you are feeling. Best of Luck:)

My own experience.

Don't know. Sometimes they make random drug and alcohol testing a provision of the diversion or probation. Sometimes they don't. I would suggest that you go to alanon. You need to learn to detach yourself from your brother's issues. You're right that your parents shouldn't have bailed your brother out of jail. By the same token, you shouldn't worry about what the terms of his probation are, and whether he's getting himself into trouble. He'll have to deal with the consequences. Try alanon.

If he was placed on supervised probation, his P.O. will probably test him from time to time; definitely for pot and other stuff. I'm not sure how they would detect alcohol, but he's looking at a world of serious trouble if he messes up drunk while on paper. Hope he takes his situation seriously, 'cause I've been there, done that. No fun.

That would depend on the conditions of his probation. If its supervised probation he will be checked periodically, if its unsupervised, that means unless he gets in trouble again he is OK. Only if one of the terms of his probation is that he cannot drink, will the consumption of alcohol during the probation be an issue.
Usually when they suspend your drivers license, its not public drunkenness, as it had to involve a motor vehicle. In my state that's a DUI 2nd offense.
