Is Newcastle Brown Ale the nastiest beer in Britain?!

Question:

Is Newcastle Brown Ale the nastiest beer in Britain?

Yesterday someone said to me that they had had a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale for the first time in years, just to see if it was the same as before. It was. They said it was vile. I used to drink it when I was a student, when its nickname was "Pukey Brown" or a "bottle of dog" (from "dog rough").

However both friends and acquaintances have given mixed reviews: some say it is, just as ever, chemical infused insipid filth, a drink for the tasteless and the uncouth; yet some have said it is the nectar of gods appreciated only by the most refined palates and the critics should leave their prejudices behind.

Who's right?

Someone has said that one might infer from my remarks, seeing as NBA apparently has a strong regional following in geordieland and the geordie hinterland, that I am inferring both geordies and their beloved local brew are chemical infused, insipid, tasteless and uncouth! To set the record straight I make no such judgement but if others wish to make such a point I'll not stand in their way - we are a land of free speech!

i dont like it but it used to be very popular

I have always enjoyed Newcastle (I'm from the states), although I prefer Boddingtons.

I have been told by British friends that in the UK, Newcastle is not revered the same way Guinness is, for instance, in Ireland. In fact it's considered kind of lowly there, like say Stroh's is here in the US.

I still think it's good, and will continue to drink it. I have never met anyone who outright hated it and thought it was nasty, and I would vote against anyone who described it as such.

Cheers!

Not sure if it's the nastiest beer in Britain, I haven't tried them all... yet. ;o]

AHH... a fine beer from Scottish and Newcastle breweries Ltd.

Not a bad glass of beer all things said. Gives you one hell of a hangover the next morning tho'. Legend has it there is a hospital ward in Newcastle full of Nuckey brown victims- those who have lost their mind and speak gibberish due to brain damage from over consumption!

My vote for the nastiest beer is marstons pedigree- it is indeed vile tasting an gives you a dose of the trots next morning. It is no doubt however, an aquired taste.

Kestral superstrength is worse, however if your 18 and only have £1 to get drunk, they you can't be choosy :-)

superb drink

It used to be a nice drink not anymore.

if the bottle was sitting in your friend's basement for those years, i wouldn't trust your friend's judgment in the first place.

however, newcastle has some issues with temperature. if you drink it ice cold, then you're going to find yourself with a very strong taste that's different from american lagers. if you let it get to about 55 degrees, it becomes much more palatable.

i'm curious to see how many people prefer bass ale to newcastle.

i can't claim to have many british beers, but i'll take anything that isn't pasteurized or infused with nitrogen over anything that is.

it's not one of england's finest ales nor is marston's pedigree or tetley bitter. they are all so so but have reputations in their own area. you should try double maxim from the north east or sam smith's old brewery brown from yorkshire, both examples of brown ale. england's best is thomas hardy's ale from dorset.

I like Newcastle Brown only it churns my stomache, its definetly an acquired taste like Olives or Marmite either you like it or you dont! I cant stick wishy washy beers like most lagers!

Tried it once and that was once too many.

No !! I can't stomach Newcastle Brown but that muck Guiness that they make in Ireland should only be used for cleaning chewing gum from the streets!!!!!!!, and then your shoes would need to be steel soled to prevent rotting
