Can you suggest some californian wines i might like based on other wines i like?

i tend to always go with australian wines and always shiraz or shiraz cab. i like penfolds, little penguin, yellowtail, woop woop... to name a few. i know that i like a very smooth drinking wine. i would like to start branching out and tasting wines from other areas of the world (first i would like to conquer californian wines!) but i never know what to start with. any suggestions?

My prereferance is a good merlot but looking at what you like I would sugest you try a cabernet sauvignon from Beringer. I strongly sugest that you purchess a bottle produced exclusively fortheBeringer Rhine house. It has to be bought at the winery not available in comercial retail market.
