Answers:

Bartending school is usually just a scam. The other answerers had good advice. There are a couple of good routes to bartending:

First, you could work in a restaurant as a server, study your drinks at home, and work your way up to bartending. As a server, you should demonstrate that you're fast, have a great personality, you're honest, and you can solve problems on your own. After you've demonstrated these characteristics, tell your manager that you want to bartend, and that you've been studying your drinks. You should also make friends with the bartenders in the meantime by being patient for your drinks, offering to get them buckets of ice, etc. They may be influential in the decision to put you behind the bar because it's a team effort.

Secondly, you could study your drinks and then apply to work at a really seedy dive bar. They are less picky about who they hire, but make sure you know how to stand up to jerk customers and that you know how to defend yourself. This was my first kind of bar experience, but it was invaluable. I worked there for 4 months, and then was able to be hired elsewhere because I had experience.

There are several routes to bartending, but the worst one is wasting your money at a scam school. They just want your money, and they know young people who haven't bartended don't know better. I've been in the restaurant business for 19 years, so I know what I'm talking about. Lucky for younger people like you, I have been working my way through grad school (as are many other bartenders) and will retire shortly, making way for the new group of bartenders. Hang in there, be fast, work hard, be competent, be personable, study your drinks, and you'll be bartending before you know it! Have fun.
