Can a hard shot of liqueur cure a chest cold?!

Question:

Can a hard shot of liqueur cure a chest cold?

Answers:
No, But it can help a cough by surpressing the area of the brain that controls coughing.

i doubt it.

I swear by a Hot Toddy.

Get a cheap bottle of whisky and pour a capful into a mug. Boil some water and add to mug. Add honey & lemon (or sugar) to taste. Get into bed and sip as quickly as you can decently manage.

Its never failed for me.

I advocate it..would suggest two or as many necessary

but I didn't sleep at a holiday inn express last night

No. Not 'cure" it. The only way to cure a cold is to fight it off with your immunities. Sometimes a shot helps like a pain killer and tranquilizer so you sleep better. Too much alcohol will actualy prolong a cold because it wears on the body, making it work harder so it has less defense to ward off illness. Rest is very important. Exposure to cold is bad, that makes your body work harder (however, a mild workout - boosting your heart rate for @10min/day is good ) Also helps to strengthen the body with nutrition.

No. While alcohol can kill some of the germs in your mouth and throat when you swallow it, ingesting alcohol compromises your immune system. Alcohol is a toxin and has to be broken down by your liver for elimination from the body. The last thing your body needs when sick is "one more thing to worry about."

The best treatment for a chest cold is:

Drink plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated liquids - as much as you can, at least 64 ounces a day. Hot herbal tea can help alleviate coughing. You might also try inhaling steam or using a humidifier with warm water.

Gargle with warm salt water or Listerine to bring down the swelling of a sore throat and kill germs.

Take an expectorant, which loosens and thins the congestion in your lungs so you can cough it up (gross, but the only way to get rid of it!!). Look for cold medicines with the ingredient GUAIFENESIN - Robitussin and similar cold meds often include it.

Unless your fever goes over 101 degrees, don't take any Tylenol or aspirin to treat it (or if you're really in pain). A fever is the body's natural response to try and kill germs.

Use sugar-free cough drops with menthol to help control coughing. I like the sugar-free ones because I don't have to worry about them rotting my teeth if I use them in the night, and they don't provide a sugar source for bacteria to use.

Hope you feel better!

It won't shorten the course of the cold, but given enough, it certainly makes it more tolerable.

No, but getting drunk will make you forget about your cold.
